Students Must Bring
Rubber or disposable laytex gloves to keep dye off hands. (Note: Mary doesn’t wear them unless she is doing an immersion dye bath as a small amount of dye on skin isn’t going to harm it.)

At least 2 dozen push pins for pinning fabric to the frame; metal ones work best
Hair dryer to increase drying time of the resist we will be using
3 to 4 small water color type paint brushes to draw designs on the silk with the resist.
Lunch
Old clothes that won’t be ruined if you get dye on them
Scissors
Large self-addressed stamped manilla envelope so Mary can mail your finished piece to you; 4 stamps should cover the postage (Mary will take your work home to steam in her steamer)
One or two rags for wiping up spills
4 to 6 plastic yogurt cups or plastic cups to put your dye in
Your imagination and willingness to learn and HAVE FUN doing it !!!!!
Note
We will be stretching the scarves on canvas stretcher frames in different different sizes: 12″x72″, 12″ x 60″ and 36″ squares
Cost for the pre-washed and hemmed scarves will range from $5 – $10 each
Bring sketches of designs you might want to try. Go to www.salomesilk.comto get ideas.
You should try to do at least two that will work on a square format and another for a long regtangle. Keep your designs simple – remember “Less is More”.
Other Information
In the one-day workshops students will have time to do 2 to 3 scarves or fabric squares. In the two-day workshops we will explore other techniques such as stamping, foiling and stenciling using thickened dyes and over already dyed pieces.
